President's Update

Growth in Numbers and Influence Leaves a Solid Foundation for Future Achievements

It has been a phenomenal two years serving as your President. I would like to thank you for placing your trust in me to move CANP and NP practice forward. CANP’s Vision Statement calls on us to revolutionize health care and the role of the nurse practitioner. I would like to thank the Board of Directors and our management company, Shaw / Yoder / Antwih, Inc. for the hard work, perseverance, and dedication that has taken CANP to the next level.

Our finances are in great shape. Our membership numbers are climbing. Our reach on social media has grown by over 10 percent in just the past year. We are soon launching a revamped website. We have more interest in leadership and a strong alignment between chapters and state. And this year we had our most successful educational conference with the highest number of attendees ever!

One of our greatest achievements has been in the realm of political influence. CANP is now a well-known organization at the Capitol. Legislators request our endorsements when running for office and our support of their bills, and they actively amend bills to gain our support.

As a result of this, CANP’s Board of Directors adopted an endorsement policy to assure objectivity in our process. The policy is non-partisan and involves a candidate questionnaire to evaluate that candidate’s support of NP practice and full practice authority. As a result of that endorsement policy, we had three gubernatorial candidates interested in our endorsement, and through a process of board interviews we unanimously voted to endorse Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom for Governor in 2018. Lt. Governor Newsom has extensive knowledge and experience in health care policy and recognizes the need to establish new pathways for nurse practitioners to practice to the full extent of their education and training. The road will be long and bumpy and it will take the efforts of every NP in the state to push forward, but California will get there!

As I pass the torch to incoming President Karen Bradley and your new Board of Directors, I would like to acknowledge those coming off the board. Donna Emanuele has been a steadfast advocate for NPs in all realms. She is an educator, mentor, and cheerleader who works diligently to advance the NP profession and as a steward of CANP. Barbara Lome has worked hard with our management team and her Finance Committee to control expenditures and increase revenue to keep CANP fiscally sound. Virginia Hass helped make the abstract reviews more efficient for the education committee going forward.

I have two years to continue to serve CANP as Immediate Past President, and our members and I look forward to working with our incoming Board of Directors.
