Featured Practice Question

I have a DEA license, but I took the course to add Schedule II drugs to my DEA. I see that on the BRN site it is updated to schedule II, but when I tried writing a prescription, it did not go through. How long does it take for things to process?

Typically the BRN updates information to the DEA for those who have completed the C2 course within a couple of weeks. The next step is that you must apply to the DEA for a license to prescribe scheduled drugs.  If your prescription did not go through it is because you do not have an active license to prescribe scheduled drugs.

Official order forms may be ordered by calling the DEA Headquarters Registration Unit toll free at 1-800-882-9539 or the nearest DEA Registration Field Office. The forms will be mailed within 10 working days. Official order forms may also be obtained by submitting a completed requisition form, DEA Form 222a, to DEA, Registration Unit, PO Box 28083, Washington, DC 20038-8083. Order forms may also be requested through the DEA’s Diversion Control Division website.

Featured Legal Question

I am going to be volunteering at a free medical clinic this weekend. The organization sponsoring the clinic doesn’t appear to have any type of NP standardized protocols for volunteers, or have any awareness of them. I imagine most volunteer NPs are using their agreement with their collaborating physician through their regular practice, but my employer has expressly told me that any volunteer activities outside work are not covered.

I am going to try to get a basic generic set of protocols signed by one of the volunteer physicians at the clinic for the weekend. If this does not happen, would I be covered if a physician co-signed my charts?

You CANNOT work as an NP in California without SPs or a collaborating physician. Co-signing by a physician would not help, as the law states you must have SPs signed by the physician and administration. The BRN does not treat you better as a volunteer. An easy SP is Rebecca Zettler's Process Protocols.
