Can't-Miss Conference Offering

Legislative Session to Provide Update on Achievements to Date, Challenges Ahead

Among the most well-attended conference sessions every year, the Legislative Update is certain to draw a packed house as attendees get the latest details on the most pressing policy issues facing California nurse practitioners.

The conference takes place March 17-20 at the Marriott Newport Beach Hotel & Spa. Register today and make plans to be there.

For this year's rendition of the Legislative Update, CANP Legislative Advocate Kristy Wiese will be joined by Assemblymember Susan Eggman, who, along with Senator Ed Hernandez, is the co-author of Senate Bill 323.  The pair will illuminate what lies ahead for the measure, while also providing insight on the challenges, opportunities and expectations to assure success in the current legislative year.

SB 323, which seeks to remove outdated practice barriers on nurse practitioners in California, has been designated as a two-year bill, meaning its progress through the Legislature could pick up right where it left off last June, when the measure failed passage by the Assembly Committee on Business and Professions.  The bill had previously passed out of the Senate on May 7 by a vote of 25-5.

As a two-year bill, SB 323 could be reconsidered by the same Assembly committee this year. In the meantime, CANP leaders continue to meet with legislators and stakeholders to work to overcome resistance to the measure, and to seek resolution to the additional policy issues relating to the ban on the corporate practice of medicine and regulatory oversight that have been raised by segments of the physician community in opposition.

In the meantime, grassroots outreach continues to be critical.  During the conference session, Wiese will also discuss the impact of those efforts to date, and the important role that CANP members and allies must continue to play in order to help the bill advance.

The Legislative Update session takes place on the second full day of the conference, Friday, March 18, beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Don’t miss this opportunity to learn all there is to know about developments in Sacramento that impact the NP profession in California.
