Featured Practice Question
Is there something that clearly outlines how AB 890 impacts us and our practice in 2023? What we need to do to qualify?
As you know, AB 890 allows NPs to work without physician supervision, removing the supervisory requirement in existing law so NPs can provide the same high-quality care they do today and care more directly for patients. This law has a number of intricacies, and our policy experts will work with the BRN to determine what language needs changing/updating based on the new law.
We will have more details about independent practice outside of an organized health system. New graduate NPs will need to do a three full-time year or 4,600 transition to practice and then have three years of practice in good standing before opening up their own practice unless the NP has a DNP.
There has not been any decision about what previous work experience will count towards independent status. If the NP has a DNP, the BRN will provide guidance on whether the three years of practice in good standing can be less than three years. More action needs to be done by the BRN, so please check back with CANP for more updates.
You are encouraged to check back on the CANP AB 890 Information page, or for more information on how AB 890 impacts your practice, visit our Overview of AB 890 page.
Featured Legal Question
In the light of Executive Order N-39-20 and AB 852, can we anticipate 104 NPs will be allowed to open their own practices without physician supervision prior to January, 2023?
I would not count on anything until everything is in writing. Right now you need three years of practice and three years of transition.
