Featured Questions Highlight

Each month, we feature select responses to questions submitted via our Ask a Practice Question and Ask a Legal Question online forms.

Responses are coordinated by Surani Hayre-Kwan, Director of Professional Practice and Nursing Excellence in the Office of Patient Experience at Sutter Health, and Melanie Balestra, CANP attorney, and a practicing NP. The ability to submit questions and receive responses from our team of experts is a free benefit of CANP membership.

Featured Practice Question

Q: What guidelines are there for setting up a safe COVID-19 test site?

There are some resources that may help you. The CDC is a good place to find information about infection control and testing set up. Another option is to check with the California Primary Care Association, the professional association for community clinics in California. Finally, you should discuss your concerns with your Human Resources team. They are aware of the Cal OSHA workplace safety guidelines and should be able to review it with you.

Featured Legal Question

Q: Were there any changes in AB 5 for NPs? Can we be contractors or employees of naturopaths, if we have an MD supervisor as mandated by law? Does the MD need a formal contractual relationship with the ND?

There are no changes related to AB 5 yet. Prop 22 addresses Lyft and Uber drivers. Naturopaths cannot act as a collaborating physician. You could act as an Independent Contractor under a physician providing services to naturopath patients. The physician would have to have a contract with the Naturopath and you with the MD.
