Ask The Experts

Featured Questions Highlight

Each month, we feature select responses to questions submitted via our Ask a Practice Question and Ask a Legal Question online forms.

Responses are coordinated by Surani Hayre-Kwan, Director of Professional Practice and Nursing Excellence in the Office of Patient Experience at Sutter Health, and Melanie Balestra, CANP attorney, and a practicing NP. The ability to submit questions and receive responses from our team of experts is a free benefit of CANP membership.

Featured Practice Question

Q: Are there any laws or literature on NP to patient ratios within the hospital setting?

There is nothing in regulations limiting or capping NP to patient ratio. It would seem reasonable that the NP hospitalist has the same standards as the physician hospitalist because there is no difference in care expectations between these two roles.

Featured Legal Question

Q: Are collaborating physicians required to be on site? Can the NP collaborate with a physician located in a different region of the state?

They are not required to be on site. The BRN likes the physician to be within 60 miles.
