Featured Questions Highlight

Each month, we feature select responses to questions submitted via our Ask a Practice Question and Ask a Legal Question online forms.

Responses are coordinated by Surani Hayre-Kwan, Director of Professional Practice and Nursing Excellence in the Office of Patient Experience at Sutter Health, and Melanie Balestra, CANP attorney, and a practicing NP. The ability to submit questions and receive responses from our team of experts is a free benefit of CANP membership.

Featured Practice Question

Q: In the state of California can a FNP and dual certification PMHNP practice both family medicine and psychiatry at the same visit or do they need to be separated by specialty?

No, insurers will not recognize two specialties for a single visit – you must choose one or the other. Also, you cannot bill for both visits on the same day.

Featured Legal Question

Q: As an FNP can I practice at an outpatient behavioral and mental health clinic? I would be managing low acuity depression/anxiety/ADHD patients often seen in primary care, and deferring higher acuity to a psychiatrist.

You would need a family practice physician for your collaborating physician, not a psychiatrist. Your collaborating physician needs to be in the same field that you are.
