Prior to implementation, it was estimated that 2000 behavioral health patients were seen annually, with an average stay of 26 hours. Post implementation, initial goals include average length of stay reduction of 25-50%, a decrease in avoidable admissions to medicine by 10%, and a reduction in severe workplace violence injuries by 50%.

Incidence of diseases transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, kissing bugs, and other familiar and exotic vectors is increasing in California and other areas in the U.S. Symptoms are rarely straightforward, but understanding the need for treatment based on a presumptive diagnosis can help manage outcomes. Timely treatment is increasingly essential, since some vector-borne diseases can be quickly fatal and/or have lasting sequelae if not promptly addressed. Nurse practitioners will also learn vector behaviors (ticks don’t drop from trees) and evidence-based bite prevention strategies to share with patients who live in, work in and travel to bite-risk locations.
