CANP and Broad Coalition in Support of Independent Practice for Nurse Practitioners Applaud Governor Newsom for Signing AB 890
Sacramento - The California Association for Nurse Practitioners lauds Governor Gavin Newsom for signing AB 890 by Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Santa Rosa), which would allow nurse practitioners to practice to the full extent of their education and training, into law.
California now joins 22 other states including every state in the West, by allowing nurse practitioners to practice independently.
“We are pleased that the Governor and the Legislature recognize the importance of expanding access to high quality health care for all Californians,” said Patti Gurney, President of California Association for Nurse Practitioners.
“We are especially grateful to Assemblymember Wood, who led these efforts, and all of our many coalition partners who worked collaboratively to address concerns and craft a new law that will expand access to health care,” Gurney continued.
The CANP-led Close the Provider Gap Coalition of 80-plus organizations, local chapters, and supporters have worked tirelessly to elevate the severity of California’s growing provider shortage and demonstrate how NPs can help all Californians, especially underserved and rural communities, gain desperately needed access to health care.
AB 890 will take effect on January 1, 2023.
