Florence Nightingale Statue Unveiling

Please join Councilmember Gilbert Cedillo, Department of Recreation & Parks, and Department of Cultural Affairs to unveil the restored Florence Nightingale statue.

The Florence Nightingale sculpture, created by David Edstrom, is a 9’ h x 3’ l x 4’ w figurative sculpture that commemorates the life of Florence Nightingale and her contributions to the nursing profession. The sculpture is made from cast stone and depicts Florence in a nurse uniform with hat and long flowing dress. In the sculpture, as Florence is situated on a base, she holds a lamp with her right hand and protects the flame with the left hand.

The sculpture was commissioned during the 1930’s New Deal Era for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and funded by the Hospital Council of Southern California. The artwork was gifted to the City of Los Angeles, and with approval from the Los Angeles Municipal Art Commission in 1937, officially became accepted into the City’s Art Collection.

Restoration Project:

Based on their specialization in conservation efforts of built heritage, a term that encompasses art, architecture, museum collections, and public spaces, Rosa Lowinger & Associates was selected to conserve and restore the Florence Nightingale sculpture.

The Greater Pasadena Chapter along with the collaborating efforts from our sister CANP chapters, Tri-Valley and Inland Empire, will be hosting a PAC fundraising event titled "An Evening of Wine & Roses" on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 6PM in the Huntington Ballroom in the Courtyard Marriott in Pasadena.

If you were not able to attend Lobby Day 2014, think of this PAC event as your Lobby Day in your backyard.  We need every chapter NP to support this event. We will have state legislative representatives and/or their office staff present to meet and greet all NPs. Nursing Excellence Awards
